Luxury South African womenswear label Vanessa Gounden unveiled its Spring/Summer 2019 collection titled Africa Rising at d’Evreux Hotel in Paris on the 25th of September, for Paris Fashion Week.
The highly applauded collection is derived from Vanessa’s own heritage and ancestry which celebrates the diversity of African society and its right to self-determination in a post-colonial era. The show welcomed the radiant summer season with highlights of iridescent gold, green and vibrant bold hues. Vanessa also contracted local South African artisans, who used the suminagashi ( watercolour marbling ) on silks and linens, to add to the texture of the collection.
Africa’s culture and heritage is represented in confident shades of colour. Soft and flowing silhouettes encompass a relaxed yet regal glamour along with powerfully structured statement suits and majestic African gowns, inspired by the diverse rich cultures within Africa.
The collection evolves into a stylish yet detailed exploration into Africa’s past, present and future. The ambience for the show was glamorous with an allure of the most influential fashion bloggers and industry leaders in Paris.
Vanessa designs her work for intelligent and spirited women where classic styles endure over trends. Each collection centres around a concept that is close to Vanessa’s heart, the narrative beautifully created on garments with such attention to detail, each piece retains its sense of bespoke individuality and always represents Artivism.
