The fifth annual Condé Nast International Luxury Conference hosted by British journalist, fashion critic and Editor of Vogue International Suzy Menkes, OBE is currently holding in Cape Town. This year’s conference tagged The Nature of Luxury will examine the promise and value of the African market for the global luxury and fashion industry, and the power of the continent as a creative, manufacturing and retail hub.
It’s set to be two full days of celebrating Africa and exploring the role of skill and craft in developing the African luxury market.
Yesterday, there were a series of panel sessions, keynotes, and interviews, with speakers including Naomi Campbell, Abrima Eriwiah among others who discussed sustainable business and conscious consumerism, the importance of Afrocentric luxury, strategies for retail success and the ongoing influence of technology.
Attendees included Edward Enninful, Denola Grey, Rich Mnisi, Trevor Stuurman, and the best of the best in the South African fashion scene.

Day 1 of the @condenastinternational#cniluxconference. Highlights, besides getting snapped with these amazing people at the #CNILux installation at the V&A…
@uchechicc’s talk on the Afrocentric Luxury Opportunity where she asked the room full of delegates from around the world “Do you love Africa?” Then followed that question with “Do you love Africans?” A provocation she followed with so many insights and commentary that I honestly wanted her to talk forever. The visionary @laduma’s talk, who expressed that his aspiration is the preservation of culture. I loved watching some of the foreign visitors mesmerized and inspired by what he is doing as he spoke.
