If you have been following me for a while now, you would know how much emphasis I have laid on ‘Confidence’ and its importance to a great personal style. This is because, it determines how you are perceived by outsiders, how you carry yourself, and how you are able to communicate with people. Confidence is pretty much the buy product of everything I have discussed in the past, on importance of a good personal style, maintaining your personal style and improving on your style. Thus, if you need a little help with confidence in your style department, below are five (5) practical steps you can follow in gaining your style confidence and clearing out all doubts when you step out the house. Without further ado, let’s jump right into it.
1. Build a Capsule Wardrobe
A capsule wardrobe simply means editing your wardrobe down to only clothes that fit into your lifestyle and body type. It is important to your confidence because a good capsule wardrobe makes it easy for you to always pick out what to wear for all of your occasions. In achieving this, make sure you have the essential wardrobe staples (you can check ‘The 10 Wardrobe Staples’ here) and also build in such a way that your clothes can work with each other. Hence, whether you are headed to a corporate environment, school, church, drinks’ with the girls etc. you would always have what to wear and be confident about your choice.
2. Make Sure your Clothes Fit Perfectly
Secondly, always always wear clothes that fit and flatter your body type, there are majorly five(5) body types and it is essential you know what category of body type you fall into and what clothes would flatter it. Agreeably, all clothes are not always going to fit perfectly, this why you need to have a good tailor on standby that can help fit clothes to your satisfaction. Ultimately, it helps you feel good about yourself, what you are wearing, and most importantly you are more confident in the way you carry yourself.
3. Learn how to Balance Proportions
The logic around balancing proportion is knowing how to pair your clothes rightly. For example it is best to accentuate your waist if you are a curvy girl; never wear loose and loose for tops and bottoms, instead wear loose and fitted; avoid wearing different patterns from top to bottom etc. Understanding the idea of proportions and balancing helps you make right style choices and improves your overall look. This can be self- taught or with the help of a stylist.
4. Know your Colours
Colours are a vital part of how clothes would suit you, as colour compatibility varies from one skin tone to another. Initially, it is very ok to play around with colours to see which suits your skin tone better and once you have figured it out, you then begin to apply it to clothes you buy and wear. It is also important to have your base and accent colours, as these will help in creating some balance with colours and once you feel good about yourself you unconsciously exhibit that confidence.
5. Declutter your Wardrobe
Lastly, get rid of clothes that don’t make you feel good about yourself/bad and those you do not like from your wardrobe. This is because the more you wear these clothes the more your confidence goes out the window. One of the advantages of decluttering is that it give you more room to yourself, it provides space for you to put things you actually need and would wear, and it easier for you to pick out clothes from closet, without a doubt you would always be banging each time you step out the door!
