In November, Mount Nelson, A Belmond Hotel, Cape Town, will host CONFECTIONS X COLLECTIONS (CxC): an annual gathering of creative expression blending five days of exclusive salon-style fashion shows with designer-inspired confectionery. This highly anticipated event will take place from November 8 to 12, 2023, and will showcase an impressive lineup of leading fashion designers from Southern and Western Africa, highlighting the world of slow, thoughtful African fashion.
The property will host two daily fashion shows per designer, scheduled for 11:00 and 15:00. This year’s remarkable lineup features Cape Town’s own “Prince of Prints” Chu Suwannapha of Chulaap, Sindiso Khumalo, who won the internationally acclaimed 2020 LVMH Prize, Bubu Ogisi of IAMISIGO, Adeju Thompson, founder of Lagos Space Programme, and Johannesburg-based Palesa Mokubung of Mantsho, known for her bold, print-centric garments rooted in African indigenous culture.
Mount Nelson’s pastry chef Vicky Gurovich will collaborate with each designer to craft bespoke creations that will transform the hotel’s traditional Afternoon Tea into a limited-edition culinary experience. To curate this celebration of creativity, culture, and confections, Mount Nelson partnered with Twyg, an independent magazine at the intersection of fashion and sustainability. Jackie May, Founder and Editor of Twyg, expressed her excitement about showcasing local and West African slow-fashion designers and those championing a culture of care, honouring artisans, and celebrating African fashion.
According to the brand’s General Manager Tiago Moraes Sarmento:
Set in the vibrant heart of Cape Town, it’s only fitting that we should shine a spotlight on the city’s buoyant creative spirit, from the arts and fashion to culinary delights. Championing Africa’s leading fashion designers is just one of the ways in which we’re doing this.
In celebration of its upcoming 125th anniversary in 2024, ‘The Nellie’ is committed to leaving a lasting impact as the cultural heart of Cape Town. This commitment will be demonstrated through an annual program of celebratory events encompassing the arts, design, gastronomy, and fashion, set to launch next year.
