Hi BellaStylistas! It’s Isoken and every month, I’ll be sharing a short letter spotlighting our monthly theme from my personal perspective and giving you an idea of some of the amazing content we have planned. Welcome to our #Power issue !
Editor-At-Large Isoken Ogiemwonyi introduces BellaNaija Style’s #Power theme for February.
The French writer Victor Hugo once wrote, “One can resist an invasion of armies; one cannot resist an invasion of ideas.”
This is something I agree with wholeheartedly, and with the rise of social media, the spread of ideas is ever more infectious. It is in one part the reason we will be taking a deep dive into the idea of power. The power of ideas; the power of influence; the power of collaboration, and how these themes are translated, consumed and remixed in our day to day lives. We’ll be discussing, dissecting and celebrating the power of creative collaboration. Of course since this is the month of love, we will be remiss if we didn’t talk about the power of love, especially celebrating our favourite celebrity couples.
In our inaugural Ones to Watch 2019 list we will be highlighting 29 extraordinary talents who we think are building brands and taking control of their individual narratives in a truly extraordinary way. We’ll be exploring their creative process, the passion that drives them – and how they do what they do.
As always we’ll let you know about all the designer collections the season has to offer. We will also continue our exploration of fashion’s current obsessions – from trends like animal print and underwear as outerwear. We pay homage to the abiding love of print (note: if you only invest in one thing this season, make it a Mangishi Doll piece ) We’ve also taken a look at some of the season’s biggest beauty trends
Look forward to wonderful shoots with talented photographers like Adebayo Jolaoso showcasing emerging designers to know now – from basics with a twist to downright exotic outfits. Our fave influencers will show you how to nail the new Insta-aesthetic, while our shopping section is chock-full of all your must have pieces and wardrobe updates, from the beauty to fashion.
We are positively buzzing over the success of our second Social Media Week as a fully fledged website! For a few amazing hours we took over the Experience Stage at Social Media Week and invited some of the most amazing women working at the intersection of fashion and social media to speak on our panel ‘’. Speakers including the brilliant Toju Foyeh, the savvy Sophia Ike Onu, the talented Veronica Odeka, the phenomenal designer and entrepreneur Wana Sambo, and David Peterside of the disruptive Fashion Map App, it was a truly insightful day.
If you didn’t make it, never fear: you can check out our recap and get a feel of what went on and learn some of the most important tidbits right here!
And finally thank you for the comments, emails, responses, DMs and even in-person interaction (!!) telling us how much you’re loving our content on BellaNaija Style, it means the world to the team and I and reminds us that all the hard work is worth it.
THANK YOU SO MUCH for your support and we hope you continue to join us as we grow in 2019. We have so many exciting things happening this year and we cannot wait to share!
