Worn by celebrities like Beyoncé, Lil Mama, Issa Rae, Maria Borges, Tiwa Savage and Bonang Matheba, as well as featured in CNN, Vogue, Elle, InStyle and Fast Company, Selly Raby Kane is definitely an African designer to watch.
According to a statement from the brand:
Spathodea Campanulata is commonly known as the fountain tree, flame-of-the-forest, or Pichkari.
It is a tree that grows between 7–25 meters tall and is native to African tropical dry forests. It is a large upright tree with glossy deep green pinnate leaves and glorious orange scarlet flowers.
This season, Selly Raby Kane explores West African vegetation and creates a conversation between the Pichkari flower flame and aquatic quilted textures. From juxtaposed gathered belts to slogans referring to urban Dakar, the pichkari collection is a quest of balance between maximalism and lightness, between extravagance and causality.
Pichkari serves as a metaphor for power, invasion, and placid passion.
