Nigerian brand Semande just released the lookbook for its Spring/Summer 2020 Collection and it’s layered with all the nostalgia you can imagine. Tagged “Like Play, Like Play” – an expression from Nigerian broken English that translates to “Just Like That,”- the brand says that this collection was inspired by the 80s Nigerian childhood nostalgia.
Semande’s Spring/Summer 2020 collection themed ”Like play, Like Play” is inspired by an early 80’s Nigerian childhood nostalgia. It is influenced by African childhood toys, a child’s ability to explore and create a world and experience from nothingness, insignificant and worthless everyday items ranging from empty detergent packaging, empty Tomato Puree cans to cubed sugar packaging and creating role-play with the famous African barbie (The Clonette doll).
Featuring a vast range of bright colours, that include fuchsia pants, turquoise blazers, and orange stripes, the designer takes us on a trip to our childhood years.
Semande has summed up this nostalgic experience into a playful and colourful fashion collection, bringing together the elegance of the 1980’s fashion and her signature traditional western Nigerian silhouettes to create a story of 2 worlds she was raised in.
