Ogidi Women: Masterclass with the Masters of Craft
When it comes to cloth-making, nothing rivals the intricacies involved in the weaving of the Aso-Oke. Centuries-old and a treasured Yoruba heritage, the making of the Aso-Oke is one of Africa’s proudest fashion traditions. Today, one of the most prominent custodians of the Asa-Oke tradition are the Ogidi Women.
The Ogidi Women are one of the creative forces behind the evolution of Aso-Oke from linear designs to more vibrant and colorful styles. For years, The Ogidi Women have honed their expertise in weaving Aso-oke and have developed an unrivaled style and technique in the fabric’s designs, motifs, and painting, which has been exported all over the world.
Adesuwa Aighewi & Millen Magese
When Adesuwa Aighewi isn’t walking the runway for high fashion labels such as Vera Wang, Marc Jacobs or Chanel, she is making films or writing books and editorials. Of Nigerian, Chinese and Thai descent, Adesuwa is renowned for vocalizing the deep layers of culture, history, and societal impact embodied by the fashion industry.
Adesuwa started modelling to financially support herself while she was an intern at The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). However, she took a leap in her modelling career when, in 2010, she partook in a test shoot. Since then, Adesuwa has dominated the biggest runways in the world and graced the covers of renowned magazines including Vogue, I-D, New York Times Style. She has also featured in multiple editorials for Harper’s Bazaar, CR Fashion Book, Dazed, amongst others.
In 2018, Adesuwa was named in the Dazed100, a list of the most influential people shaping youth culture. In 2019, she was named in Models.com’s “Top 50” supermodels list and was recognized as one of the leading Creatives of the “NEW WAVE” by the British Fashion Council.
On Saturday, November 9th 2019, Adesuwa Aighewi will be at the GTBank Fashion Weekend to demonstrate The Art of Ruling the Runway in a Masterclass facilitated by Millen Magese, veteran Supermodel and Ex-Miss Tanzania.
